A Modern Update

D10, D20,D50,D110,MT32...

Introduced in the late 1980s, the Roland 'D Series' synths quickly became commonplace on stage, in the studio and bedroms, all over the world. Yamaha's forray into FM Syhthesis with its massively popular (but now very dated 'thin' sounding) DX7 was a massive move away from the previous analogue sounds of ARPs MOOGs and Jupiters and Poly Korgs of the 70's and late 60's.

Utilising PCM LA-Synthesis, Roland were able to embody the spirit of both these technologies and more importantly, make them intuitive to use in work pieces - the Roland D50 has been heard on more film soundtracks than any other instrument in modern times!

Several variants followed: D10 D110 D20 D5 MT32 and lastly the D70 (albeit with additional PCM synthesis engines).

However, editing to get more than the preset offerings was always for the die-hards and expert enthusiasts. Unless you had access to some very specific technology (these predated personal PCs and VSTs!), then you had a hard time on your hands!

However, is good that some did, because nowdays, these instruments ae being revisted and it now is becomming apparent just how much more they can offer  - they can easily command a place in the live rig or modern studio setup.

If you are one of those who has long ago put away their 'D series' synth in favour of VST patches on a laptop, then go and have a look at just what modern, punchy sounds these instruments can be making for you!
